Blue Gem Wind welcomes new UK floating offshore wind target

This week’s announcement by the Prime Minister on setting a target of 1 GW of floating wind by 2030 will be looked upon as a significant milestone in accelerating the floating offshore wind sector in the UK. This Government commitment and support will undoubtedly help unlock the significant opportunity for floating wind in Wales, Cornwall and the South West.

With up to 250 GW of wind resource and independent studies suggesting 50 GW is realisable, the Celtic Sea will play a key role in delivering the new target.

Hugh Kelly, Project Managing Director, Blue Gem Wind, “We are progressing well with our 96MW project, Erebus, 45km off the coast of Pembrokeshire and see this first project as just the start in unlocking a significant low carbon opportunity in the Celtic Sea. “

Preseli Pembrokeshire MP Stephen Crabb added, “For a number of years I have been pressing the case for Pembrokeshire to become a focal point for marine renewable energy, especially off-shore floating wind, so I am delighted to see the Prime Minister and his team at Number 10 seizing the agenda on this. Companies like Blue Gem have the potential to help the Government meet its ambitious climate change targets, while bringing new jobs and apprenticeships to our County.  With the right framework set by Government and the Crown Estate, we could see a pipeline of exciting projects delivered through Pembrokeshire in the years ahead.”
